The joys of home ownership.

Less than a week after buying the house, the air conditioner went dead. It is now day 15 of home ownership, and we're fixing the furnace.

The air conditioner, we knew, was old. The last guy who'd looked at it said that in its day it was "the Cadillac" of AC units, but that day is long past. The furnace we'd had little problems with before, but it's a fairly new furnace, and we didn't expect anything like this today. On the plus side, it's still under warranty, so it's not costing as much to fix.

I fear what might fail next. I'm afraid to even guess.

Do you have a basement? Wait until you have to sweat out the first major rainfall concerned about water getting in.

We have a basement, but it's tight. We bought the house we've been renting for a couple of years, so we've already seen heavy rains. Of course, this doesn't mean the basement won't be breached by Mole People.

I know how that goes. When we moved here, the house didn't come with a home warranty. (Our old house did - basically, if anything went wrong in the first year, it was covered. When we sold that house, we put a warranty on it, in order to make it more attractive to buyers - and we have to replace the furnace.)

Anyway, for a while we were going through an appliance a month. We added our own water softener, instead of keeping the rental one. The magic smoke escaped from the dishwasher, then the washing machine stopped washing. It does eventually get better - hopefully the basement and the roof won't give you problems.
